AI Policy

This policy describes how Kijiji News uses artificial intelligence. We are committed to transparency about AI in our newsroom.

How we use AI

We use AI for the following limited purposes:

  • Generating internal editorial briefings to help journalists understand the day's news landscape.
  • Assisting with headline suggestions and article summaries for editor review.
  • Processing and ranking source feeds to surface relevant stories.

What AI cannot do

  • AI cannot publish articles. All publications require human editorial approval.
  • AI cannot approve content, change article status or modify editorial decisions.
  • AI cannot access reader data, subscriber information or private communications.

Disclosure

Articles that were materially assisted by AI tools are labelled AI-assisted. This label indicates that an AI tool contributed to drafting, summarising or researching the article, and that a human journalist reviewed and approved the final version.

Safety and oversight

AI outputs are treated as drafts requiring editorial review. We do not treat AI outputs as factual claims. Editors are responsible for verifying all facts before publication regardless of how the draft was generated.

AI prompts are designed to keep retrieved external content separate from system instructions, to prevent prompt injection from news sources.

Budget and cost controls

AI usage is subject to daily and monthly spending limits. An automated kill switch halts AI operations if limits are exceeded. Costs are reviewed regularly by editorial management.
