Grade 9 learners chose eight senior schools; placement follows December KJSEA results

About 1.2 million learners competed for roughly 1.6 million places in public senior schools, according to Education News.

About 1,196,000 Grade 9 learners took part in senior school selection in September, competing for roughly 1.6 million places in senior schools nationwide, according to Education News.

The Ministry of Education's portal opened on 6 September, and selection ran from 7 to 11 September 2026 through the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS). Learners picked eight schools, down from 12 last year: three C1 schools, two C2 schools, two C3 schools and one C4 school.

Parents and learners could use the "My Selections" feature, with the learner's assessment number, to confirm that choices had been saved, then review, submit and download a confirmation slip. Problems were to be reported to the junior school or Ministry support teams before the deadline.

This year's process covered public senior schools only. Private institutions will join later, "during the revision stage", Education News reported.

Placement happens after the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results are released, which the report says is expected in December, with learners moving to Grade 10 in January. Kijiji News did not find an official release date for the results in the sources it reviewed, so parents should watch Ministry of Education and KNEC announcements.
