Wajir man suspected of Ebola tests negative, diagnosed with malaria

Governor Ahmed Abdullahi urged residents to stay calm and rely on official updates after preliminary results ruled out the virus.

A 20-year-old man treated at Habaswein Sub-County Hospital in Wajir County tested negative for Ebola, Governor Ahmed Abdullahi said in October, easing fears of a possible outbreak in the area, according to The Standard.

The patient, who reportedly travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda into Kenya, was tested after health officials assessed his clinical presentation. Preliminary results from the National Public Health Virology Laboratory in Nairobi were "negative for Ebola Virus Disease", the governor said.

The Nation later reported that the man had malaria, under the headline "Relief as Wajir man tests negative for Ebola, diagnosed with malaria".

The governor urged residents to avoid sharing unverified information, which he said could cause unnecessary fear and panic, and asked anyone who notices unusual signs of illness to report to the nearest health facility. He said the county government, working with the Ministry of Health, would keep monitoring the patient and provide care under public health protocols.

The case came days after Kenya confirmed its first Ebola case, on 6 October, in a patient who died in Nairobi after returning from the DRC.
