Welcome to Kijiji News: local voices, national perspective

An editor's note on what this newsroom is, how it works, how it uses AI, and how to reach it — from all 47 counties.

Kijiji News is a Kenya-based digital newsroom committed to independent, fact-based journalism that serves all 47 counties. We cover politics, business, health, technology, environment and culture from communities across the country — from Nairobi to Mandera, from Mombasa to Turkana.

This note is the first thing we are publishing, so it is worth saying plainly what we are, how we work, and how to reach us.

Why local news

We believe local news matters. A decision taken in a county assembly, a clinic that opens or closes, a road that is finally tarmacked or quietly abandoned — these shape daily life far more than most national headlines, and they are reported far less. Our aim is to bring credible, timely reporting to every Kenyan, wherever they live.

How we work

Our editorial decisions are made by our editorial team, free from commercial, political or other external influence. The standards that govern our reporting are published in full on our Editorial Standards page. In short:

  • We verify facts before publication. Where a claim cannot be independently verified, it is attributed to its source.
  • We give the subjects of our reporting a fair opportunity to respond before publication wherever that is practicable.
  • Sources are named wherever possible. Anonymous sources are used only where there is a compelling public-interest justification. We do not pay for information.
  • We take care to minimise harm, and we are especially careful in reporting on children, victims of crime and vulnerable people.
  • We correct errors promptly and transparently. Significant corrections are noted on the original article and logged on our Corrections page.

How we use artificial intelligence

We use AI for a small number of defined purposes: generating internal editorial briefings, suggesting headlines and summaries for editors to review, and processing and ranking source feeds. AI cannot publish an article, approve content or change an editorial decision — every publication requires human editorial approval. Articles materially assisted by AI tools carry an AI-assisted label, and all AI output is treated as a draft that an editor must verify. Our use of AI is subject to spending limits and an automated kill switch. The full policy is on our AI Policy page.

In that spirit of disclosure: this note was drafted with the help of an AI tool, working only from our own published policies, and was reviewed and approved by a human editor before it went live.
