A chama runs on trust, but trust grows stronger when members do not have to rely on it alone. In many groups the treasurer keeps a notebook or a spreadsheet, and when a member wants to know their balance they send a text or wait until the next meeting. The delay feels small until someone wonders whether their last payment was recorded, or why another member seems to owe less. The moment members start comparing notes outside the meeting, doubt creeps in, even when the books are perfectly honest.
The simplest way to stop that doubt is to let every member see their own record whenever they want. When a member opens their statement on a Tuesday evening and sees every contribution they paid, every loan they took and every shilling they owe or are owed, they do not need to ask the treasurer if it is correct. They already know. If something looks wrong they raise it immediately, while the details are still fresh, instead of letting it fester until the next meeting. Problems get smaller and groups stay calmer.
Chamabora is a chama management app that gives each member their own login, so they can check their statement, loan balance and receipts any time without waiting for an official. The app keeps all the group's records but never holds the money itself; contributions stay in the group's bank, SACCO or treasurer's M-Pesa account. When a member reports a payment, an official confirms it before it appears on the books, so no one records their own transaction. That two-person rule runs through everything: contributions, expenses, loan approvals and disbursements.
Officials see reports the whole group needs, like arrears, the loan portfolio and the cashbook, and members see only their own position. Contact details are visible to officials alone, so a member's phone number or ID does not spread beyond those who need it. A receipt number is issued when a payment is confirmed and every change is logged in an audit trail that cannot be edited. When the time comes for the annual general meeting, the app generates an income and expenditure report from the live records, and members walk in already knowing their share because they have been checking it all year.
Say a group has twenty members. Each pays Kshs 10 a month, so the whole group pays Kshs 200. The first two months are free, and every chama is also free until 30 April 2027 with no card needed. If the subscription lapses later, records stay readable and exportable; only new entries pause. When members can see their own statements without asking permission, the treasurer stops fielding questions and the group stops second-guessing the books. Transparency becomes automatic, and trust stops being a matter of faith.
